Forget TV Dramas…Do You ‘Love / Hate’ the Dentist?

There’s no denying that the hit TV series ‘Love / Hate’ has done little to improve the perception of dentists in Ireland; thanks to the alarming portrayal of Andrew, the rather worrying ‘cowboy’ dentist. Carrying out crown surgery on perfectly healthy teeth? Yikes!

Thankfully, the reality is far removed from the fictitious world of this crime drama, and the vast majority of dental practitioners in Ireland are dedicated, experienced professionals (phew!). However, the programme has led many people across the country to start discussing their attitudes regarding dentists; and for those that experience nervousness of dentistry to talk about their feelings more openly.

Dentistry: Do You Love or Hate It?

There’s no denying that dentistry is a bit of a ‘marmite’ practice. Many people don’t have a problem with sitting in the dentist’s chair, and some even find the experience a pleasant one, particularly when their teeth feel sparklingly clean afterwards.

However, for a significant portion of other people, the mere thought of visiting the dentist is liable to bring them out in goose bumps. In fact, this fear is so common that it even has a name – odontophobia.

Overcoming Your Fear of the Dentist

If you fall into the latter category, and find the thought of visiting the dentist a horrifying prospect; don’t worry, you’re certainly not in a small minority. In fact, many people experience some form of anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist. However, it’s important to recognise your feelings and to ensure that you’re visiting a dental practice that acknowledges your emotions and knows how to put you at ease.

Guiney Dental Practice in Ballincollig: We Understand How You Feel!
