Shiny Teeth: How to Encourage Your Child to Brush Consistently

Let’s face it, not many children enjoy brushing their teeth twice a day, and it’s often a source of bedtime battles for families. Here at Guiney Dental, we understand the importance of great dental care from an early age, but we also understand the stress this can cause and we want to help you with this, too!

We’ve spent many years working with children who are learning to brush their teeth effectively, and we’re always happy to support and advise you regarding your child’s oral hygiene. Here are our top tips for encouraging your child to brush their teeth effectively every time, leaving both of you with smiles on your faces!

Top Tips on Tooth Brushing for Kids

  1. Get into a healthy habit. From the time when their very first teeth emerge, brush your child’s teeth and gums for them, gently cleaning every surface of each tooth. This will help your child to get used to having their teeth brushed, and to see it as part of their daily routine, in the morning and in the evening.

  2. Make it fun. Letting your child choose a toothbrush with their favourite character on it, or with a flashing light timer, may help them to see brushing as a fun part of the day. Singing silly songs, or letting your child brush your teeth while you brush theirs, can encourage good cleaning on a daily basis.

  3. Set a good example. Brushing your own teeth regularly will be the best way to model good oral hygiene to your children. Brushing for at least two minutes, twice a day, as well as flossing and taking care to eat a good, balanced diet, will demonstrate the importance of these things and encourage your children to copy you.

  4. See a dentist regularly. Your family dentist will be able to give you advice and support to keep your child’s teeth healthy, and it’s important to take your child to visit from an early age. If you struggle with fear of visiting the dentist, try not to pass this on to your child – speak to your dentist about it to prevent it becoming an issue.

  5. Make use of technology. There are several apps that encourage good tooth brushing, and one of these may be just the thing to appeal to your child. Sometimes children experience difficulties when learning to brush for themselves, and periods of resistance to brushing are common, so make use of these tools at such times to minimize stress and help get things back on track.
