What Causes Tooth Discolouration?

There are a number of factors that can contribute to tooth discolouration, such as:

  • Age
  • Eating habits (many foods contain colourants, which cause staining)
  • Smoking
  • Damage to teeth from trauma
  • Genetic predisposition

If you’re worried about the colour of your teeth, don’t suffer in silence. Guiney Dental Practice can help.

What to Expect from Teeth Whitening Treatment?

It’s really important to remember that the level of whitening that can be achieved depends very much on their original colour, and also the exact cause of the discolouration.

As a general rule, yellow teeth respond excellently to whitening. Darker, greyer teeth can take longer to respond, particularly grey teeth that aren’t caused by staining but by a pigment within the tooth itself. However, in the vast majority of cases, you can expect to enjoy real results as a result of teeth whitening.

Who can Benefit from Teeth Whitening?

Tooth whitening will only work on natural teeth, not crowns, or teeth that have been veneered or filled. However, providing your teeth are natural, there is no reason why you can’t benefit from teeth whitening treatment. The treatment itself is recognised as very safe and will not damage your teeth at all, though it’s important to be aware that the treatment may cause some sensitivity immediately afterwards.
